World Language Achievements and Seal of Biliteracy Awards 2021

The Wilmington World Languages Department is very proud to recognize the exceptional efforts and achievements of our Class of 2021 World Language students.

The State Seal of Biliteracy is part of a national movement now across 45 of the 50 states that recognizes students who are able to be part of a language and culture beyond English. This is our third year awarding the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary State Seal of Biliteracy and the State Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction, and the Language Opportunity Coalition Biliteracy Achievement Awards! 

This year, we were very proud to present this senior class with 19 awards! We had two students earn awards in multiple languages. Landrick Diaz earned a Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction in Spanish and a Seal of Biliteracy in French. Jesse Ding earned the Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction in Chinese and the Language Opportunity Coalition Biliteracy Achievement Award in Spanish! 

The Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction is given in recognition of students who have tested and proven an Advanced-Low level of proficiency of a second language. This year we were proud to awarded 2 of these:

The Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy is given in recognition of students who have tested and proven an Intermediate-High level of a second language. This year we were proud to award 9 of these:

The Language Opportunity Coalition Biliteracy Achievement Award is given tor students who have attained Intermediate-Mid Proficiency in a second language. This year we were proud to award 8 to:

Khrystyna Fedynyak (Spanish)

Ryan Forcina (Spanish)

Jack Gaglione (Spanish)

Shane Penney (Spanish)

In addition to these outstanding achievements, a number of our seniors were recognized for their world language accomplishments and excellence by several national and state organizations! 

The American Association of Teachers of French recognizes outstanding seniors across the country. This year the AATF Outstanding Senior in French Award went to:

The Massachusetts Foreign Language Association is an inclusive organization that promotes effective world language education by supporting a diverse community of language educators whose vision is that all students will demonstrate proficiency in more than one language and culture.

Each year MaFLA offers a number of student contests and scholarship opportunities and the Wilmington World Language students earned a number of awards this year!

The MaFLA LEADERSHIP AWARD was awarded to:

    Aaliyah Abel for distinguished leadership in world language community and activities

The MaFLA EXCELLENCE IN WORLD LANGUAGES AWARDS were awarded to:

    

    Alyson Broussard for Excellence in Spanish, and

    Landrick Diaz for Excellence in French

The MaFLA PAST PRESIDENTS AWARD - MaFLA awards up to 4 awards of $500.00 annually in honor of its past presidents. Awards are given to high school students who have demonstrated excellence in foreign language study and service/leadership within their school. This year one of those 4 awards went to:

MaFLA STUDENT CONTEST WINNERS - MaFLA wants to raise students’ awareness of the role that world languages play in the state and to involve students and teachers more actively in that purpose. The Student Contests are intended to allow students to demonstrate the effect that being multilingual and multicultural has in our global society. Students submitting entries to these contest consider what each year's theme means to them and the importance of being multilingual.

This year Wilmington Seniors earned two overall division prizes along with a $50 prize:

MaFLA Video Contest Winner - Ryan Forcina

NATIONAL LANGUAGE EXAM AWARD WINNERS

In addition to all the already impressive awards above we also got to honor Landrick Diaz with an impressive performance on the NATIONAL FRENCH EXAM.

Landrick earned the Bronze Medal in the Level 5 contest competition. That placed him 2nd in the AATF Northeast Region, and 13th overall nationally. 

On behalf of the entire Wilmington World Languages Department, we are so proud of all of your achievements, seniors! We hope your eyes and ears continue to be open to the many adventures you will get to experience through being multilingual!
