MAFLA Awards - Class of 2026

MAFLA Awards

MAFLA was founded in 1967 by a group of Massachusetts world language educators originally associated with the New England Foreign Language Teachers Association. The purpose of the new organization was to advocate for language programming within our state as well as to establish the presence of the discipline before the State Board of Education. Today, MAFLA continues to advocate, run essential professional development for world language educators, and honor the incredible achievements of world language students in the state.

The MAFLA Excellence in World Language Award is conferred to high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the most advanced course of each language taught in each school.

This year we were delighted to present the MAFLA AWARDs to the following seniors:

For excellence in French: Emma Callahan

For excellence in Italian: Olivia Saragosa

For excellence in Spanish: Kaitlyn Shackleford

On behalf of the MAFLA Board of Directors, we also presented the The Past Presidents’ Award

This scholarship, in the amount of $500, honors high school seniors who have completed their school’s world languages program, are planning to continue their language studies, and have demonstrated service or leadership in world languages within their school or community.  Only four scholarships are awarded across the entire state of Massachusetts.

Our recipient is an enthusiastic student of Spanish, one of the pioneering travelers on our first Spanish exchange, a founding member of our Student Exchange Committee, and has been invaluable to the development of the program.

This year we were very honored to present the MAFLA Past Presidents’ Award to Jake Cronin.

Congratulations to everyone and we wish you all the best!
